These breeds may not shed the way others do, but they require frequent maintenance. Their coat continuously grows, which requires regular styling and trimming to keep it at a desirable and comfortable length. Because of this, their coat can start to matt fairly easily, so regular brushing at home between grooming sessions will help as well!
Examples: Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, Bichon Frize, Maltese, Lhasa Apso, Havanese, Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier, Coton de Tulear, Briard, etc.
-
These breeds grow a top coat and an undercoat. The topcoat has a stiff texture and helps repel water and dirt, while the undercoat has a dense fluffy texture which serves as insulation against warm and cold temperatures. Usually, they tend to shed the most during seasonal shifts. A regular grooming schedule helps maintain coat and skin health, especially during those big shed cycles. Removing the dead coat helps it from building up leading to tangling and hotspots from moisture and poor air circulation.
Examples: Golden Retriever, Australian Shepherd, Bernese Mountain Dog, German Shepherd, Husky, Welsh Corgi, Shiba Inu, Saint Bernard, Great Pyrenees, Pomeranian, Rough Collie, American Eskimo Dog, etc.
-
These breeds generally have a short coat that lays close to their skin and has a smooth texture. They can shed quite a bit and just like any other breed, their coat and skin becomes dirty… and stinky! Regular grooming helps maintain their coat and skin health, while removing dead coat, which can cut down on shedding at home.
Examples: Pug, Labrador Retriever, Rottweiler, Boxer, Great Dane, French Bulldog, Bull Terrier, Short Haired Chihuahua, Mastiff, Doberman Pinscher, Cane Corso, Dalmatian, Beagle, etc.
